What is the University’s legal name and charitable registration number?
The legal name is the Governing Council of the University of Toronto. The Canadian charitable registration/ BN # 108162330-RR0001.
Will I receive a tax receipt for my gift to U of T?
Yes. Note that tax receipts are issued in name of the individual paying for the gift (e.g. the credit card holder or cheque signatory).
What are the simplest ways to give?
You can make a gift online (by Visa, Amex, or MasterCard) and receive an instant electronic tax receipt. Cheques may be made payable to the University of Toronto and mailed to:

I live in the United States. Can I still donate to U of T and will I get a receipt?
Yes, alumni and relatives of alumni in the US can make certain types of gifts directly to U of T. All other individuals should donate to The Associates of the University of Toronto, Inc. Read more about US and international gifts here. All eligible donations are recognized with a tax receipt.

Can I claim a donation made by my spouse or common-law partner for tax purposes?
Yes, you can claim the donation tax credit for gifts made by your spouse or common-law partner, according to the Canada Revenue Agency’s administrative policy. This is subject to the claim limits stated in answers below.
What if I can’t use all of my receipt in the year I make my donation?
Each year you can claim a tax credit for donations up to 75 per cent of the net income reported on your federal tax return, but you don’t lose your tax break if you exceed that limit. The excess can be carried forward for up to five years, still subject to the 75 per cent limit in each year claimed.
If I made a donation in my will am I or my estate entitled to a tax receipt?
Yes, your estate is entitled to a tax receipt if you leave a gift in your will. The donation limit is 100 per cent of net income in the year of death and the year immediately preceding death.
How is my receipt calculated when I donate stocks?
The University’s policy is to use the closing price of the stock on the day it is received in the University’s account.
Do I need to pay capital gains tax on appreciated stock if I donate them to U of T?
As of May 2006, if you donate certain publicly listed securities directly to U of T you are not required to pay tax on the capital gains, while receiving a tax receipt for the current value of the donated stock.
Can I donate my home to the University, get a tax receipt, but continue to live in it for my lifetime?
Yes, it is possible to transfer ownership of a property during your lifetime and continue to live in the residence. When you legally transfer ownership during your lifetime, you will receive a tax receipt for a portion of the value of the property. Is there a tax advantage of having something certified as Canadian cultural property?
Yes, donations of Canadian cultural property can be claimed up to 100 per cent of net income and any capital gain arising on the donation of the property is not taxable. For more information e-mail gift.plan@utoronto.ca or 416-978-3846.
